The conflicting situations that are the starting point of my work are communicated using different media, mainly photographs, videos and objects. I use these elements so as to create discrete levels or planes behind or in front of the pictorial surface. The aim is to infuse the image with depth, liveliness and three-dimensionality so as to make it seem more real both to me and its eventual viewers; another aim is that it would enable me to share the original conflicting situations with the viewer. My term for the final works installed in a gallery or some other venue is ‘situation sculpture’.

Practical Masochism 17.2.–12.3.2017

Exhibition Laboratory, Merimiehenkatu 36

Welcome to the opening on Thursday, February 16 at 5–7pm

It can be said that there is something intrinsically masochistic about art making. But what about works that take this further, works that deal with things too close, too private, too sticky? Practical Masochism is not a show about ‘pain work’ as such; instead of just flirting with the iconography of masochism, it approaches the topic from a more emotional perspective and asks what the possibilities and limitations of a masochistic mode of working are. What are the risks?

Including work by: Elisa Aaltonen, Aino Aksenja, Artor Jesus Inkerö, Okku Nuutilainen, Marjatta Oja, Jaana Ristola, Iona Roisin

Curated by Mariliis Rebane and Iona Roisin

småfolkets porträttör*

Fredag 27 januari kl 17-21

Galleri Erik Axl Sund, Folkungagatan 103, Stockholm

*Marjatta Oja *om "Pattern":

"I have started collecting video files of my situation sculptures, the earliest

made back in 1990. They are mostly everyday videos without any drama and

they are taken because I wanted to solve the specific situations of those

specific times. While collecting some of them now together at Galleri Erik

Axl Sund, they are there for the audience interpretation. I am waiting for

a pattern to appear. The Pattern consists of five to seven different

non-stop video projections. They are partly overlapping one another, and

they run independently different time periods creating a continuous change."

efterlämnade närmare 800 glasnegativ i format 9x12 centimeter.
