The conflicting situations that are the starting point of my work are communicated using different media, mainly photographs, videos and objects. I use these elements so as to create discrete levels or planes behind or in front of the pictorial surface. The aim is to infuse the image with depth, liveliness and three-dimensionality so as to make it seem more real both to me and its eventual viewers; another aim is that it would enable me to share the original conflicting situations with the viewer. My term for the final works installed in a gallery or some other venue is ‘situation sculpture’.

Pienenergia/Small Scale Energy 2017

The exhibiton is compiled by Marjatta Oja:

"Pienenergia (Small Scale Energy) Exhibition is dealing with human size energy. The selected art works do not consume energy more than their authors can produce. In other words, the works are human size and have been produced mainly for domestic space and use, often constructed by hand, as tools for private use. Being economically 'unprofitable' they have been left to develop in peace. In these works the artists, many of whom work on their art persistently without support, have preserved their innovations, ideas and dreams."

In the exhibiton Oja launches the Ajatus Archive (Archive of Thoughts), an on-going project for archiving artists’, thinkers’ and inventors’ ideas, which have emerged from the desire to improve our relation to our environment and nature. The archive will consist of art works, projects and ideas that have not yet been presented, got enough attention, or people do not know about them. The first parts of the Ajatus Archive project will be launched in Pienenergia exhibition.

Venetsia-building in Lapinlahti former psychiatric clinic (Lapinlahdentie 1, 00180 Helsinki)

In the exhibition, I have asked for works from artists, who in their artistic work examine our relationship to worrying everyday phenomena, such as mass production, conspicuous consumption, incremental waste, energy production and its commercialization, conflicts and how time concerns us.

Individual artists, thinkers and designers invent all the time things, which could help and improve on our cohabitation with each other and the nature – sometime even solve big problems. However, often individual thoughts get buried under louder media, big institutions and spectacles.

I have collected art works by four artists and ideas by more than ten artsists, designers and thinkers in a small exhibiton space – an old storeroom for linen in the former Lapinlahti psychiatric clinic in Helsinki. The first open call for ideas for the Ajatus Archive (An Archive of Thoughts) did not spark anyone, but when I contacted people personally, I got an excited response. Thank you for all the participants! This is an example of what is important also at this moment... human size energy, interpersonality and mutual communication.
